Meet actor Mokksha whose street dance at Kolkata protest has gone viral

For the past 37 days, protests have been erupting nationwide against the RG Kar rape and murder case. In Kolkata, the epicentre of this outcry, demonstrations have continued around the clock, drawing participants from various walks of life. Among them, one unique protest video has captured widespread attention on social media. It features Mokksha Sengupta, a dancer and actor, performing a powerful dance in response to the incident, set to a song by poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
A street performance organised by an NGO took place in Santoshpur, South Kolkata, on August 31, where Mokksha joined to express her solidarity. Her street dance, a creative form of protest, has since gone viral across various social media platforms.
Mokksha Sengupta is a Bengali actor known for her work in South Indian cinema. Hailing from Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas, she initially pursued a career as a teacher before transitioning to acting. She began her career in Bengali films before moving to South India, where she now works in Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu cinema.
In an interview with India Today, Mokksha shared her response to the incident.
“When I first heard about the crime, I was in Hyderabad for a film release and was unaware of the situation. As soon as I learnt about this heinous act in Kolkata, I returned to my city to protest. I felt compelled to act because I am a sensitive person. As an artist, I chose street performance as my form of protest. I dedicated my time to participating in various protests, using my art to voice the concerns of the common people, standing as a representative of the city’s residents,” said Mokksha.
The Supreme Court will on Tuesday hear the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
